Cruise Compass: Anchor’s Away – March Edition

Published on 5 March 2026 at 06:00

Welcome to Cruise Compass, the blog from Cruisin’ With Ed.

This is where I share cruise tips, destination highlights, and helpful insights for travelers who are thinking about taking a cruise. Many of the people I work with are first-time cruisers, so my goal is to make cruising easy to understand and comfortable to plan.

You’ll also find articles from time to time in Ed’s Safe Harbor, where I talk about accessibility and special needs travel so more people can experience the joy of cruising.

Whether you're just starting to explore cruising or already dreaming about your next voyage, Cruise Compass is here to help you navigate the journey.

Cruise Tip: Pack a Carry-On Bag

On embarkation day, your checked luggage may take a few hours to arrive at your cabin. During that time, many cruisers are already exploring the ship, grabbing lunch, or heading to the pool deck to start enjoying their vacation.

Packing a small carry-on bag with essentials like swimsuits, medications, sunscreen, phone chargers, and travel documents allows you to begin enjoying the ship right away without worrying about when your luggage will arrive.

It’s also a good place to keep anything you may need during the first afternoon onboard. A little preparation here can make embarkation day much more relaxing and help you start your cruise feeling like you’re already on vacation.

Destination Spotlight: The Caribbean

The Caribbean remains one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world, and it’s easy to understand why.

Beautiful beaches, warm weather, clear blue water, and vibrant island cultures create the perfect setting for a relaxing vacation. Many itineraries include stops at destinations like Cozumel, Nassau, Grand Cayman, or private cruise line islands designed specifically for cruise guests.

For first-time cruisers especially, the Caribbean is often the perfect introduction to cruising. The itineraries are typically shorter, the weather is usually warm year-round, and there are plenty of excursions available—from snorkeling and beach days to cultural tours and local cuisine.

It’s one of those destinations where you can be as adventurous or as relaxed as you want to be.

Ed's Safe Harbor

Cruising can be a wonderful vacation option for travelers with disabilities or special needs.

Modern cruise ships are designed with accessibility in mind, offering accessible cabins, elevators throughout the ship, and crew members trained to assist guests when needed. Many ships also provide accessible seating in theaters, pools with lift access, and pathways that make it easier to navigate the ship.

There are also services and organizations that work with cruise lines to help make shore excursions and onboard experiences more accessible for guests who may need additional support.

If you or someone traveling with you has specific accessibility concerns, I’m always happy to help explore options and answer questions so you can feel comfortable and confident planning your cruise.
